India: Delhi – Lodi Gardens
The New Delhi is surprisingly green and atmospheric with a lot of straight line grand boulevards and parks. One of the most appealing and famous park in the heart of the city is the Lodi Gardens. It was created on the orders of the wife of the British Resident, Lady Wilmington, who had two inner city villages cleared to create a wide open space not far from the British colonial government buildings just a short stroll away on the hill. The four old structures that remained in the space of the park are beautiful historic tombs Mughal-era tombs – Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, Tomb of Sikandar Lodi, Shisha Gumbad Tomb and Bara Gumbad Tomb – all from the 15th century. There is also an ancient bridge and hundreds of royal palms and bamboo patches with beautiful rose and flower displays. This is were Indian elite comes to relax and hang out, kind of like the Indian versions of New York’s Central Park.
