India: Delhi – Qutb Minar
Qutb Minar! The UNESCO listed ruins revolve around the central minaret that rises 73m/240 feet into the sky and was built to resemble the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan. The minaret was built in 1192 during the time of the Delhi Sultanate. The historic complex has several other semi-ruined mosques and monuments dating to 12-13th century. Even more interesting is the much older Pillar of Delhi – a 7m metal rod that was created sometime around the 3rd century. The metal composition is such that it hasn’t gotten corroded in nearly two thousand years. Nearby, there is also the foundation to another minaret that was supposed to top the Qutb Minar but never got completed.
