India: Goa – Reis Magos Fort
And one more Goan fort – Reis Magos. This one was built about half a century before Fort Aguana to the west of it, and is much smaller but much more picturesque. Reis Magos was built in 1551 and looks like a typical Portuguese fortress with inclined walls and classic Portuguese turrets. It stands near the narrowest point of the Mundavi River as it exits into the sea and this allows for control of the estuary. The star-shaped fort had 33 guns defending it and multiple layers of walls. It is meticulously restored and absolutely beautiful with panoramic views of near and far away Goan beaches. Outside of the fort and a little bit inland near its walls stand an absolutely stunning Reis Magos Church, shining brilliant white on top of the stairs.
