India: Jaisalmer – Patwon ki Haveli Houses

Haveli is a type of house that usually belongs to ultra-rich gold and silver (and sometime opium and money-changing) traders in northern India and Pakistan. Jaisalmer has several of some of the opulent havelis in the world, including arguably the richest Patwan ki Haveli. The golden sandstone building, built in early 19th century, is carved to extreme with floral designs, elaborate overhanging balconies and windows, ornate doorways and staircases. Preserved as a museum, the inside is over the top rich as well – with painted walls, gold embroidered clothing, expensive silverware and even a turban collection. Life of 19th century rich and famous on full display in the mirage desert city of Jaisalmer.
