India: Jodhpur – Jaswant Thada
Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph complex not far from the Mehrangarh Fort, also on a high ground. If you don’t know what “cenotaph” is (and I didn’t) – it’s a mausoleum-like tomb without the actual body inside. Jaswant Thada was built by Maharaja Sandra Singh in 1899 in order of various maharajas that preceded him. Royal lineage and tombs aside, the complex is built of the finest marble that is polished very fine and thin so as to glow in the sunlight and moonlight. The main building looks more like a temple and there are smaller gazebos and other cenotaphs around.
