Indonesia: Java – Prambanan Temples

The Hindu temple complex of Prambanan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and easily rivals the more famous Buddhist Borobudur. It is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and one of the largest in southeast Asia. Dating back to the 850 CE, the complex consists of 240 spiky temples  – 3 main large temples dedicated to Shiva, Visnu, and Brahma in the middle; 3 smaller ones in front dedicated to Nandi, Garuda, and Hamsa; a few more smaller ones, and then finally 224 small stupas surrounding the whole thing in endless square rows. Stunning sculptures are reliefs adorn most of the temples, and the larger ones can be climbed and explored inside.
