Israel: Jerusalem – Western Wall (Revisited)

Wall Western Wall is one of the limestone walls of the rectangular retaining wall structure supporting the Temple Mount in the Old Jerusalem dating to 19 BC. Over 2 thousand years ago, the Temple Mount held sacred Jewish Temple build by King Herod, that was later destroyed (the remaining wall rectangular rocks date from various period – from Herodian (large blocks) to Umayyad (mid-sized) to Ottoman on the top (smaller pieces)). The Western Wall retains most of the stones and structure from the original Temple, this being the most sacred place (outside of actual Temple Mount) in Judaism. Part of the wall is exposed (divided into male and female sections), and part goes below the buildings. Jews come here to pray, standing against the wall (hence the term “wailing wall”). It’s quite busy during the day, but on the night of prayer it is swarmed with thousands of people, all dressed in black.
