Israel: Qumran Caves at Dead Sea

Qumran Caves are a series of small caves along the Dead Sea where ancient 2,000 year old scrolls known as Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. A Beduin boy stumbled at the cave entrance and found rolls of written texts in 1946. Subsequently many more were discovered in this area, all dating to the two centuries BC and first century AD. Most written in ancient Hebrew and contain biblical texts hence the historical and religious significance. The caves are now protected as a national park – it’s dry sandy and salty hills overlooking the Dead Sea.
