Japan/Hokkaido: Mt Asahidake Ropeway

Mt. Asahidake is the highest mountain on Hokkaido at 2,291 m/7,516 ft, and it is an active volcano. A cable car (which they call a “ropeway” in Japan) takes you to the top plateau just a little bit shy of the summit. The ride swings for 2.3km above the colorful foliage of the fall forest and then eventually gets above the tree line, where most of the hikes around the mountain begin.
