Kamchatka (Russia): Avachinskiy Volcano
Avachinsky is another spectacular stratovolcano north of the capital of Petropavlovsk. The perfectly conical mountain rises to 2741 m / 8993 ft. And right next door to it stands even more beautiful volcanic cone of the Koryaksky Volcano. Avachinsky can be climbed in a single day (in fact, every August there’s a “volcano day’ when seemingly everyone in Kamchatka climbs the mountain). It’s a steep climb, particularly near the top. Once on top – you are in front of an active and fuming caldera, although most of the time completely shrouded in fog. Avachinsky ‘s last eruption was in 2008.
