Kenya: Coconut Beach & Indian Ocean

And finally – some beach time at the spectacular palm-fringed white sand beaches of Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. Blue translucent seas, warm water, fine sparkling white sand, and traditional dhow boats moored offshore. Paradise! Coconut Beach is a private beach just a dozen or so kilometers up the coast from the tourist trap of Ukunda. But here – no tourists, few people on the beach, great oceanfront restaurants with freshly grilled seafood, ultra-white soft sand and crystal clear warm water. Even more importantly, the local community-run Turtle Beach patrol  marks turtle nests and protects them, releasing the turtle hatchling into the water when ready. We missed a large release by a day, but luckily there still was one struggler left and we witnessed his release. Hopefully he or she survives and returns to this beach one day.
