Kenya: Lake Baringo – Verreaux’s Eagle Owl
Verreaux’s eagle-owl is one if the largest and heaviest owls in the world. Seeing it is quite rare as they hunt at night and sleep in high branches during the day. It’s a top predator (meaning, just like lions, these are at the top of the food chain and have no natural predators). A giant one of these owls roosted in the tree just above my bungalow at the Samatian Lodge in the middle of Lake Baringo. And she even came down to the ground to say hello.
