Kurils/Kunashir: Flying over Kunashir Island
Kuril Islands are infamous for bad weather – flights are often delayed for day and you also risk getting stuck there for a while. My flight from Sakhalin was cancelled for a day, but flew the following day (seriously overcrowded). But the weather was fantastic – sunny and clear, and the views of the four volcanoes on Kunashir were otherworldly. The plane flew right above the Tyatya volcano – a perfect cone with a fuming crater on top – absolutely surreal.
