Lebanon: Beirut – City Center
While seriously damaged in the civil war, Beirut center has recovered and the construction is still can be seen everywhere. It’s an insane density of sights here – spectacular 4-minaret Al-Amin Mosque stands shoulder to shoulder with the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George, and both are overlooking an extensive field of roman ruins beneath them. Several more mosques and churches are just next door. Just around is the city core composed of beautiful traditional yellow stone buildings and squares, and expensive coffee shops and stores. The center was cordoned off due to recent demonstrations but I managed to get a tour. Less people – better pictures!
