Lebanon: Beirut – Martyrs’ Square

Martyrs’ Square aka Place des Martyrs is the heart of Beirut and the most famous place in the city. The square has the Martyrs’ Monument in its center and it’s was here that most of the uprising and protests happened in 2019 and repeatedly since, so it’s a bit roughed up and graffiti-covered. But there is also an insane density of sights around it – spectacular 4-minaret Al-Amin Mosque stands shoulder to shoulder with the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George, St Elias Greek Catholic Church all of them are overlooking an extensive field of Roman ruins beneath them. Several more mosques and churches are just next door. And at sunset time – all of the structures look extra spectacular.
