Libya: Sabratha Roman Ruins
Subratha was one of the three largest Roman sites in Africa. Originally established by Phoenicians, it was taken offer and rebuilt with grandeur by the Romans in the 2nd century. At its heyday, this was a sprawling city of about 50,000 people. The ruins are located right next to the azure waters of the Mediterranean and Sabratha was a panoramic Roman port. There are many ruins preserved in excellent condition, including the Punic Temple, Byzantine Basilica, two sets of baths, capitolium, forum, several temples, mausoleum and so on. You will be the only tourist exploring this and the heat can be brutal (was 41 Celsius). The most spectacular ruin is the Roman Theater (worthy of a separate post, coming next)
