Libya: Tripoli – Old Town

Exploring Tripoli’s medina (old town) by day is a total adventure of navigating the maze of narrow streets, going into alleys covered by endless arches and overpasses, discovering hidden mosques and churches, and many antique doors and window frames. The streets are still fairly empty even at daytime (which is a Ramadan phenomenon), but you get to see people shopping in the old souk, and women and children walking around. It’s quite dusty in Tripoli as the air carries fine sands down from Sahara and many cars are covered by a lawyer of fine sand. Speaking of cars – there are no taxis in Tripoli, and every family owns a car to move around. The old town is beautiful and authentic, there are very few new or restored buildings, and it has a distinct medieval feel, with a layer of sand on everything
