Macquarie Island: More Elephant Seals
Macquarie Island is home to 10% of the global population of elephant seals. And just around the ANARE station they are everywhere – in the tussocks grass, around the station buildings, on all the paths, on the beaches. 80,000 southern elephant seals make Macquarie (which is by the way a UNESCO site) their breeding home, which is a remarkable recovery given that the seals were completely annihilated here during the nearly hundred years of sealing.
