Malaysia: Malacca – A Famosa Fortress & St Paul Church
The remains of one of the gates of the Portuguese-built A Famosa Fortress are the oldest architectural remains of the European structures in the Southeast Asia. The fortress was built in 1512 and was a large five story structure before being partially destroyed by the Dutch in 1641, and completely demolished by the British in 1807 except the only remaining Porta de Santiago Gate. Just a bit further uphill, where the fortress once stood, there are also the remains of the ruined Church of St Paul, built in 1521, making it the oldest European-built church in Southeast Asia. Both are UNESCO World Heritage.
