Malaysia: Penang – Georgetown Clan Jetties

An inalienable part of the history of Penang are the historic Chinese stilt villages along the jetties sticking out into the bay, collectively known as Clan Jetties of Penang. Originally there used to be 10 jetties, but fires destroyed 4 of them over years. As Chinese immigrants arrived en masse to Penang, they established these floating villages over the jetties, complete with houses, food shops, and even many temples. The jetties require constant maintenance and the wood has to be replaced around every 5 years. Walking out at dusk to the longest jetty, give you an awesome panorama of the city of light behind you and the mainland in front.
