Mexico/Baja Sur: Loreto & Loreto Bay

oreto is a small town that was founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1697, who then abandoned it just two years later and moved in land. They clearly didn’t understand all the attractions the city had to offer with its location – at the heart of the beautiful Loreto Bay packed with picturesque islands (most of them now UNESCO World Heritage site). The road to and from Loreto offers spectacular viewpoints of the mind blowing landscape of the Sea of Cortes, the islands, desert hills and mountains with cordon cacti everywhere. It’s almost Martian-like. The town itself doesn’t have many attraction beyond a mission church (that’s been destroyed by a hurricane and then restored) and a nice Malecon waterfront.
