Mexico/Hidalgo: Actopan – Convent de San Nicolás
The spectacular Convent de San Nicolás de Tolentino de Actopan is one of the best preserved 16th century fortress-monasteries in Mexico. Founded in 1546, it took 33 years to complete. It’s most famous for the well-preserved frescos, also considered most extensive of any old religious structure in the country. The thick defensive walls and towers stand imposing over your head, protecting the precious fresco paintings. Sadly, we could only tour the outside the convent as most museums are closed in Mexico.
