Mexico/San Luis Potosi: Cave of Swallows – At The Edge

This was a bucketlist item for a long time – the Cave of Swallows aka Soltano de las Golodrinas. This is the largest known vertical cave shaft in the world – from the edge to the bottom 370m (1,214 ft) of a freefall drop! To get here, you gotta drive in complete darkness before the sunrise and then descend 568 steps to the cave’s mouth – the ultimate abyss! And you can get to edge and peer into the blackness of it (with a rope around your waste and a guy holding you) – a surreal feeling! If you get here for the sunrise, you may get lucky to see the birds (that are actually swifts and not swallows) fly out
