Moldova: Soroca Fortress
Soroca Fortress is the most important historical attraction in Moldova – an almost fairy tale medieval fort located in the very north of the country on a bend of the Dniestr river. It was built in 1499 by the Moldovan King Stephan the Great (he’s now on every banknote). The fort is relatively small in diameter but is 4 stories high and walls are 3 meters (10ft) thick. The walls are built at an incline and the entire fortress is round as well as the four towers. The fortress was not conquered by the Ottowan Turks, but did fall to Russian troops during Peter the Great’s campaign. The fortress is very well restored with beautiful conical roofs and panoramic views over the river into Ukraine.
