Mongolia: Khorgo Uul Volcano
Khorgo Uul Volcano is the key feature of the Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan National Park (the other being a beautiful lake). The extinct volcano rises 200m/600ft above the volcanic terrain of black lava flows and mountains. It’s a short but very steep climb up to the rim of the nearly perfectly elliptical crater where you can look into the crater itself or gaze out toward the lake and mountains – an incredible panorama of dark blue water, black lava, yellow and green larch forest, and blue sky. It’s rough hiking on sharp slippery lava on the way down.
