Myanmar: Botataung Pagoda in Yangon

Botataung Paya or Pagoda is another ancient stupa in Yangon, supposedly as old as the more famous and grand Shwedagon Pagoda. What makes Botataung unique are two things – for once, after it was destroyed in WWII, they found small golden box of treasure in the ruins that was hidden deep inside the pagoda – the box contained two strains of Buddha’s hair. More impressively, Botataung Paya is hollow inside (unlike all the other). Inside, is an absolutely amazing labyrinth-like maze of golden mirrored walls and corners and dead ends. Getting lost here is surreal, and people come here to sit in corners and pray.
