Myanmar: Mount Popa – Nats Shrine
Before Buddhism consumed Myanmar, it was a polytheistic society believing in nats – multiple human-like deities akin to Greek gods or Christian saints. The nats (a total of 37 of them) actually never got abandoned but rather incorporated into the Burmese Buddhism and pretty much everywhere in Myanmar nats are still worshiped. According to the legend, nats reside on Mount Popa, and a shrine at its foot features all of them as wax-like figures (it’s a Myanmar version of Madame Tussauds museum).
