Myanmar: Mount Popa

Mount Popa is a volcano (more like a volcanic plug) rising to 5,000 feet. It’s a major geological feature and can be seen from 60-70km away. It’s almost cylindrical in shape and basaltic in content. However, despite its stunning geology, Mount Popa is more famous as a pilgrimage place with thousands and thousands of people coming here and taking a grueling barefoot one hour ascent to the top where several gilded temples and pagodas crowd on a narrow space. The views are beyond spectacular in every direction.
