Nakhchivan: Alinja Fortress
By far the most incredible attraction in Nakhchivan is the Alinja Fortress, often dubbed the Machu Picchu of the Caucases. The fortress sits high on a mountain top and required 1500 steps very steep ascent for spectacular panoramic views. At the top, it does very much resemble the view of the Peruvian Machu Picchu. The fortress existed here in early Middle Ages and was know for being absolutely impregnable, until Tamerlane finally conquered it after 14-year siege. And the best part – you will likely have the entire site to yourself.
