New Caledonia: Lifue Island – Vanilla Farm
Vanilla is produced in small quantities on the Lifou island. While New Caledonia is not generally famous for its edible orchids, the vanilla species grown here is the same as on the much more renown French Polynesia (Vanilla tahitensis). The vanilla orchids have no natural pollinators here on Lifou and have to be pollinated manually. Vanilla spice is the second most expensive spice in the world after saffron.
