Nicaragua: Cerro Negro Volcano – Sand-Boarding Down (Again)

This is a must do adventure in Nicaragua and is an absolute thrill! You ride a special wooden/metallic board down an active Cerro Negro volcano (see previous album) at high speeds. You clock around 40 km/hr (the record is 78)! It’s a 45 degree incline slope of black sand and gravel that you end up getting in your face, ears, and pretty much everywhere. And the volcano may erupt any minute as well… Interestingly, one guy rode a mountain bike down and set the world speed record at 178km/he a few years ago but ended up falling in the end and fracturing over 20 bones in his body, got airlifted, refused to be operated at the local hospital and got flown to France.
