Nigeria: Onitsha – All Saints Cathedral

The All Saints Cathedral in Onitsha is the main Anglican church and the seat of the Anglican Diocese on the Niger. Its origins trace back to the mid-19th century, with the arrival of missionaries in Onitsha in 1857. The foundation of the first church in Igbo land was laid in 1867. The present half-blocky and half-modernist structure was built between 1952-92. There is a rectangular bell tower, lots of concrete arches, and colorful glass windows – often on a clearly over-the-top style. In Nigeria, religion is a real business and churches of insane number of denominations are often business enterprises amassing massive amounts of money from guileful population.
