Nightingale Island: Circumnavigating the Island

Nightingale is the second island from the Tristan da Cunha archipelago that we visited. Given the weather conditions and the swell, landing was out of the question here, unfortunately, but we cruised around the cloud-clad island, with awesome views and plenty of birdlife in the air. The island is roughly 3.6 sq km in size and is of volcanic origin, surrounded by cliffs and rugged terrain, making landing near impossible even in perfect conditions. Lots of seabird colonies on the island – including the yellow-nosed albatrosses, and various petrels – especially spectacled petrels that were all around the ship.
