Northern Ireland: Giant’s Causeway
Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland is an area of over 40 thousand basalt columns, one of the largest of this type in the world. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989,it is truly a natural wonder; the columns disappear into the ocean as if steps of a staircase for a giant. The column are remnants of ancient lava flows as the lava cooled into the hexagonal shapes over 50 million years ago. The sea cliff around the columns are spectacular as well, with several beautiful miles of hiking to be had.
