Palestine: Hebron – Palestinian Souqs

The old city of Hebron on the Palestinian side feels like one never-ending covered souq. The historic bazaar was and tries to remain the heart of the city with traditional shops. The souqs are a series of both covered and open area trading places full of traditional shops selling everything from crafts to meat to candies to vegetables (with insanely huge eggplants). The market has been significantly shrunk due to proximity and security concerns of the Israeli settlements and in fact most of it is covered with a fence so that Palestinians couldn’t attack the settlers. Quite a lot of shops were forcefully closed and remain so. Still, you get a feel of a classic Muslim souq hustle and bustle in a deeply divided city.
