Qatar: Al Zubarah Archaeological Site

Qatar has only one UNESCO World Heritage site – Al Zubarah Archaeological Site. Located in the north of the island (you need to cross the entire country to get here), it protects the remains of the 18th century pearling town and a trading port. It was founded by pearl merchants from Kuwait, and the trade flowed from here south to Oman and India. The site was abandoned on the 19th century and not much remains of this harsh desert – foundation of some buildings and the city walls.
