Roatan: Arch’s Iguana Park – Black Iguanas
You can also see the very rare black iguanas on Roatan – Roatan spiny-tailed iguana or “garrobo” aka Ctenosaura oedirhina. These are endemic species to the island of Roatan and found nowhere else on earth but here. These iguana are endangered and less then 4000 remain (although they all safely reside mostly within reserves and protected areas in the island). Unlike the green iguanas, these somewhat scary looking black iguanas are carnivorous and feed on turtle hatchlings, small birds and insects, and even their own shed skin. As the name implies, they have spines on the tails to defend themselves.
