Roatan: La Sirena & Hummingbirds

La Sirena La Sirena is at the very end of the island, it takes a rather long gravel road to get here, past the Camp Bay beach. But it’s totally worth it for there is an over-water rustic restaurant serving freshest catch and spectacular views. Supposedly, this little shack is a local institution that’s famous all over the island. And you get a bonus of hummingbirds – dozens and dozens of hummingbirds fly to you and feed on the sugar water that’s placed all around the tables and bar. You can literally feed them off your hand – a totally surreal experience. There are around 50 species of hummingbirds in Roatan, some are even endemic and rare. We counted 2 species, perhaps 3, helicoptering around us. Hummingbirds flap their wings at between 50-80 flaps per second.
