Serbia: Velika Remeta Monastery

Fruska Gora National Park protects a mountain rising from the planes around Novy Sad and there are sixteen medieval monasteries scattered all around the mountain. One of the most beautiful is Velika Remeta, having the highest belltower of all of them. The monastery was originally built here in the 14th century and the current building erected in 1562. During the 18th century, the Ottoman invasion burned the monastery and while the building withstood, all the priceless frescos were destroyed. Attempt was made to restore but then everything got destroyed again in WWII. It has been finally recently repainted with new frescos by local Serbian artists.
