Slovakia: Kosice – St Elisabeth Cathedral
The magnificent St Elisabeth Cathedral, dating to 1378, is the westermost gothic cathedral in Europe and also the largest place of worship in Slovakia. It totally dominates the center of the old town and is by far the major attraction (together with St. Michael’s Chapel just opposite of it). The total area of the cathedral is 13,500 sq ft, accommodating 5,000 people. The cathedral is super ornate inside and out, with spectacular multiple altars (10 of them), stained glass windows, frescoes covering the walls, wooden sculptures and columns. Not to be missed is an ornate spiral staircase inside the cathedral, that you can climb for an awesome top-down view of the interior.
