Slovenia: Celje Castle
On a high clifftop above the town of Celje stands the amazing Celje Castle, the largest medieval castle in Slovenia and it looks fairytale-perfect. The castle dates back to the early 13th century. For most of the 14th century, the castle was home to the Celje Counts, an independent Slavonian state. After falling to Habsburgs in the late 15th century, the castle gradually declined and laid in ruins until being meticulously restored to its old glory. What you see today is fantastic – medieval towers and ramparts that you can climb for absolutely surreal views of the countrywide and the city of Celje below. There is also a dungeon basement with the exhibition of various medieval torture devices.
