Slovenia: Ptuj

Ptuj is the oldest town in Slovenia with history going back to Stone Age. It was a major outpost of the Roman Empire (known as Poetovium) on an important trade route to the north. One of the major attraction is the Orpheus Monument – a 5m/16ft marble column from the 2nd century with Roman inscriptions. A magnificent Ptuj Castle towers above the city – it’s quite a climb to get to the top but from there you get a full view of the tile-roofed city below and the twists of the Drava River.
