Socotra: Wedding in Socotra

Socotra sees very few tourists and most travel in small groups, visiting the natural attraction of this otherworldly Island – highlands, beaches, valleys, canyons, etc. Yet, Socotra has a very unique and old culture, once part of a separate sultanate, once independent, and with its own Socotri language, culture, and traditions. So when we were asked if we wanted to come witness the traditional Socotra wedding – we jumped on the opportunity. Singing and dancing all around the town of Qalansiyah, only men and kids as the women stayed in door and not allowed to mingle with men! No alcohol either, but everybody seemed happy and joyful and dancing and drumming away all around the super dusty streets full of trash and goats. A totally surreal experience of cultural immersion.
