South Georgia: Fortuna Bay – King Penguin Colony

Fortuna Bay is ideal for a large king penguin colony – good pebble beach, fresh water coming from glacier, flat terrain, and mountain ridge around. It’s not the largest colony of king penguins in South Georgia, but nevertheless numbers are quite significant, the noise level is substantial, and the smell is overpowering. While you need to observe the colony from a bit of a distance, there are plenty of penguins coming up close and personal to you, completely un-afraid. Plenty of brown baby penguins congregating together, waiting for their parents to bring them food. Skuas fly above and giant petrels roam on the ground – both scavenging predator birds looking to snatch a small baby penguin or more often grab the eggs.
