South Georgia: Jason’s Harbor – Elephant Seals

Jason’s Harbor had several groups of massive southern elephant seals lounging in the tussocks and on the beach. Almost all were younger subadult males, having not reached their full massive size and appearance – 12 -16 feet (3.5 to 5 meters) and weighing around 2,200-4,400 pounds (1,000 to 2,000 kg) compared to astronomical up to 20 feet (6 meters) and around 8,800 pounds (4,000 kg) for fully grown adults. The latter mate and leave the shores earlier in the season, while the subadults hang out for much longer.
