Spain/Castilla y Leon: Burgos Cathedral (inside)

The interior is the Burgos Cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is pretty stupendous in its grandeur and lavishness. There is a central dome with remnants of Moorish architecture, and then 19 chapels fanning out from it. Everywhere you look – there are elaborate gold-painted altars, sculptures, and paintings. Several chapels house tombs of religious figures as well as royalty. One chapel is packed with paintings wall to wall, some of them apparently quite precious. The amount of work and money then went into this cathedral is just staggering, and you walk around in total awe with your neck craned high to admire the ceilings and the soaring columns.
