Sri Lanka: Buduruvagala Statues
Buduruvagala are a series of massive Buddha figures carved out of the rock. The statues date back to the 10th century AD, and after the destruction of the Afghanistan Buddhas, are now the only one like this remaining in the world. The tallest statue is 51 meter tall (over 150 feet). The site is rather small and is completely off the tourist circle which is a shame, since historically and visually, it’s absolutely stunning.
