Srpska: Dobrun Monastery

Just after you cross the border from Serbia into Srpska Republica (as the border signs inform you), you quickly get to the site of the Dobrun Monastery. Spectacularly located along a gorge of the Drav River, the monastery dates back to 1353. The monastery used to be entirely decorated in frescoes, only some of which remain to this day. The monastery was nearly completely destroyed during the Ottoman years, then restored back again and thrived in the 18-19th century. Another blow came during WWII, when the retreating Nazi blew up the monastery, but once again it was rebuilt just a year later. It’s an atmospheric place with several building and very friendly people, that welcome you in and show you around.
