Srpska: Srebrenica Memorial

Srebrenica is technically on the territory of Republica Srpska, right by the border with Serbia to the east and the memorial stands as a reminder of the genocide that happened here in 1995 during the Bosnian War when over 8000 Bosniaks, mostly males, were killed here by the units of the Army of the Republica Srpska and paramilitary Serbian units. The UN has declared this “the worst war crime on European soil wince WWII”. The memorial opened in 2003 funded by governments around the world including $1 mln from the US. It’s a somber memorial of thousands of white marble grave stones spread over a hilly terrain at the foothill of a mountain range. It’s really hard to believe that massacres like this happened just within the last 20-odd years.
