St Lucia: Castries – Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Standing smack in the heart of town, the Castries Cathedral aka Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception seems large and imposing from the outside mixing Gothic and Romanesque architecture, but it’s the interior that will totally floor you. The ceiling and walls are richly painted, there are beautiful stained glass windows, ornate altars, and religious artwork everywhere. It’s a total sensory overload inside! The cathedral was built in the 18th century, although multiple fires have destroyed it and the new structure dates back to 1897. All the interior decoration are mostly work of the local St Lucian artists.
